Because it drains well. The Tifton soil series takes its name from this area and became Georgia’s official state soil in 1997, it is a well-drained sandy loam over a sandy clay subsoil. For excavation, that is good news. Compared to the saturated lowland soils in the counties south and east of here, a Tift County dig is usually straightforward, with far less need for the dewatering that slows work elsewhere.
The tradeoff arrives after the pool is finished. Sandy, freely draining soil holds very little water and leaches nutrients quickly, so the planting and soil work around the pool needs more thought about irrigation and soil improvement than it would on heavier ground. In short, the pool is the easy part here and the planting is where the work goes.
